Beacons – Sea Gooseberry Hardware Design

Working in partnership with Media Playgrounds and Alison Neighbour to provide the hardware design for an illuminated sea gooseberry. These gooseberries were hidden throughout the town of Folkestone, periodically glowing. After being found by a participant, they were invited to bring their Gooseberry to the beach where they would all magically illuminate for a final performance.

The gooseberries needed a low power way of detecting when they were at the final performance space. This was achieved with a hall effect sensor, triggering from a small magnet contained within the bottom of the jar in which they were placed. These hall effect sensors doubled up as a way to configure the device running state and retrieve the battery level – reported via the LEDs.

200 gooseberries were lovingly hand assembled and programmed over the course of 3 days
